Towering above the hamlet of Whiteleaf and visible for up to 30 miles away is a gigantic cross cut in the chalk hillside. It is 80 ft long, 72 ft across and stands on a triangular base measuring 340 ft across.
It’s history is unknown. The earliest reference to it was in a document of 1742.
On the hill alongside the cross are the remains of Neolithic and Bronze age burial mounds which indicate the long history of this area.
Recently extensive remedial work has been carried out to arrest the erosion of the cross and surrounding areas. Trees and undergrowth have been removed from strategic areas and have been replanted with new trees and special grass cultivated for the purpose. This has opened up the view of the cross.
Access to the cross can be made by foot (follow Princes Risborough Circular Walk 12) from Princes Risborough or by car. From the A4010 at Monks Risborough Turn off at the sign to Whiteleaf and follow the steep hill to the top to the car park.
Access is suitable, with care, for the disabled (see leaflet)
